Building a Catalog of Online Products

How many times have you heard that you must have your own products in order to make money online? How many times have you seen someone offering a course on how to make big money writing eBooks? How many times has something about the pitch just seemed wrong? Or at least sounded a little like snake-oil?

Well, you’re right to question the concept.

Yes, you really do need to have a list and your own products in order to make the big money in internet marketing. But you’re never going to make a fortune with a single eBook. Sorry, it isn’t going to happen. At least it isn’t going to happen to the vast majority of us.

In order to make money over the internet, you need a catalog of online products. Not just one product but a line of related products. After all, once you sell one product to a person and turned them into a rabid fan, wouldn’t it make sense to try to sell them more products? In any other market that’s where your major sales come from. And the internet really isn’t any different. But to do that you need a product line, meaning a catalog of related online products.

But how do you do this?

In this article, I’m going to explain one technique for building a catalog of online products.

Creating an online product always begins with an analysis of your customers. It can be existing or it can be a predicted customer. In any case, you need to develop a picture of your target customer.

Once you’ve done that you need to identify their motivators. What is it that will make them want to buy your product? What problems are they facing? What is going to happen in their future that they want to avoid? What would they like to happen?

Step three is to determine a solution. How can your topic or product solve their problem? How can you create a teachable system for solving their problems, achieving their goals or avoiding their fears?

Okay, now you’ve got something to sell them. All that’s necessary is to turn it into a product. Or two. Or three.

Start by identifying what products you need to create to support this line. What will be your freemium? What will be your introductory product? What will be your midrange product? What will be your high value product? Now keep going. What will be your marketing products?

Now that you’ve got one product line defined it’s time to consider the rest of your catalog. Start by going down. How many other people can you sell this product to with only minor adjustments?

Then go wide. What similar products can you create that your customers might like?

Strategies On Online Product Marketing

Just as it is in real-world marketing, there are many strategies in online product marketing. This is where most of the new online marketers make their primary mistake – they believe that the Internet is a separate market that follows a different approach.

Marketing a product on the Internet needs parallel strategies just as they need these same sales strategies in marketing products in the real world.

There may be other methods and styles of advertising now (Google AdSense, affiliate marketing, etc.) in the online world. However, these new approaches in selling a product cannot guarantee sales based on these new marketing techniques.

The following are some of the aspects you have to consider in doing online product marketing.

Competition

Know your product’s competitive advantage. Better yet, create one. How different is your product from the others? (More effective? More durable? Stronger? etc.) If you can’t find a unique competitive advantage, inventing one is the best solution.

To break through the fierce competition, your product must have a competitive edge over the others.

Niche / Specialty Market

Today, there is no more market for products that sports a one-size-fits-all quality. Your product must find its own niche – the right market where the target group is interested in your product. Scissors for left-handers sell better than regular ones, if marketed in the right niche.

Niche marketing also has the advantage of getting your product away from competition because it is regarded as a specialized one.

Right medium

Finding and using the right communications medium for your product is another important factor in online product marketing. You must know the right media to use in the marketing.

The communications medium should deliver the marketing message (including its competitive advantage) to the right customers. Whether it be a blog, a website or an online ad, the medium must serve to fit your product.

Opening a website with the plan of pushing your product online without any clear marketing message and planning (positioning, USP, target strategies, etc.) will not prosper very much.

Repetition

Just as it is in the real world, constant repetition is another important factor in selling. A marketing message that is reinforced by constant repetition has more chances of being retained in the market’s mind than those that are seldom seen and heard. (The success of products advertised constantly on TV proves that.)

After finding the right online medium for your product, ensure that the message is repeated enough times (and in different online media) to get programmed in the people’s minds to buy your products.

Message delivery

The forms of delivery of your marketing message are also crucial. The communication medium can be in the form of a blog, a dedicated website, display ads or some social networking sites.

One caution: Do not use one medium and exclude all the others. Today’s online media is in a unique form of network by themselves. You need to support the medium you are using with the available others using the unified message of your product’s competitive advantage.

A logo, however great-looking and effective by itself, is not sufficient to start a campaign on your product’s competitive advantage. It is nothing more than a visual tool, a component of your strategies on your online product marketing.

Find the Best Online Product Sourcing Option for Your Web Store

Many successful traders have learned the import of having a reliable supply of goods to the long term growth of their establishments. Subsequently, they are always on the look out for the most convenient methods to utilize. This is also the same in ecommerce where procuring the right online product sourcing can be the decisive factor to success. Luckily, as the web has grown over the years so have better sourcing techniques emerged, and it is possible to locate one suited to your online store.

Online product sourcing options can be roughly classified into two categories i.e. basic and advanced. The former alternatives- drop shipping and light bulk-are generally designed for beginners, and can be excellent choices when initially setting up shop. Usually, drop shipping wholesalers besides selling you the goods will also provide their storage, and handle eventual shipping to your web store’s clients upon purchase. This option completely eliminates the need for investing your own product storage arrangements, which makes it extremely cost effective taking into account that you also obtain a reliable product shipping method.

On the other hand, light bulb product sourcing allows new merchants to purchase their online stores products in small amounts, normally not more than $500. This can be an excellent option to use when a merchant wants to ascertain which products sell well, and which don’t, after which they can make proper augmentation of the best sellers. However, one set back of this option is that the merchant is left responsible for the products’ storage and shipping arrangements on purchase. Still this doesn’t disqualify it as safe online product sourcing mode, and once the merchant detects the best sellers he or she can begin to utilize other effective alternatives to ensure growth.

Advanced online product sourcing options are mainly used by seasoned ecommerce merchants, largely because of the huge risks they carry despite being lucrative. Consequently, it would be prudent for anyone desiring to utilize these methods to ensure that they reflect on their viability for his or her online business. Volume wholesaler product sourcing involves purchasing your products in large quantities, which qualifies you for substantial discounts on the total costs. Besides demanding a significant investment, utilizing this option without a proper strategy can get you stuck with goods you can’t sell.

Importing is a cost effective option that permits traders to purchase products from states that have affordable production costs. Consequently, it can enable you to access high quality goods at reduced prices. Caution is, however, recommended when you intend to exploit this option, and ensure that you’re conversant with the trade, and custom policies of the said country. Finally, liquidation is yet another lucrative online product sourcing option, which permits web store merchants to procure their wares at extremely low costs from auctioneers. However, unlike all the other methods it is not renewable.
